Premier League trophy to be placed ‘halfway’

MASERU — The Buddie Premier League trophy will be placed halfway between Teyateyaneng and Maseru, the Lesotho Times can reveal.

With the championship race going down to the wire, Saturday’s final fixtures will determine the destination of the 2008/09 crown.

Lioli, top of the league with 69 points, visit Joy in Hlotse and a victory for “Tse Nala” would see them win the championship.

However, if Lioli fall then second-placed LDF — on 68 points — will be crowned the champions should they beat Majantja at Ratjomose in Maseru.

A draw for LDF and loss for Lioli could also see the army side win on goal difference.

The trophy and medals will be placed at the Palace Hotel, which is almost halfway between Maseru and Teyateyaneng.

Teyateyaneng is 35km from the capital.

This means if Lioli win in Hlotse, they will have to rush about 50km back to their home ground in Teyateyaneng for the trophy and medal presentation.

The decision was taken after the Premier League executive committee met with its main sponsor Econet-Telecom Lesotho on Tuesday evening to resolve final-day logistics.

LEFA’s acting chief executive officer Mokhosi Mohapi confirmed the arrangement.

“The trophy will be placed at a location halfway between the teams’ home grounds,” he told the Lesotho Times yesterday.

“The trophy will be presented at the winning team’s home ground. It will be transported from the Palace Hotel to the new champions’ ground.”

The use of a helicopter to airlift the trophy was contemplated but the Premier League does not have enough funds.
