Mphahama is new softball, baseball president

MOLOPE Mphahama has been appointed the new president of the Lesotho Baseball and Softball Association (LBSA).

He fills the vacancy left by former president, Tšeliso Lemphane, who resigned last week.

The LBSA confirmed Mphahama’s appointment this week, saying the decision was taken by the executive committee during a meeting on Sunday.

Lemphane stepped down on 14 April, citing commitments outside sport. He had served for a year, having been elected in April last year.

“On 14 April, the outgoing LBSA president tendered his resignation letter. The executive committee met on 19 April and, after due consideration, resolved to accept his resignation,” the association said in a statement.

To ensure continuity, stability and effective governance, the statement further indicated that the executive committee moved swiftly to appoint Mphahama with immediate effect.

Mphahama previously served as the association’s vice president and is also an umpire holding a Level 1 baseball certificate.

The association said it was facilitating a structured handover to ensure a smooth and seamless transition of leadership and responsibilities.

The new president faces the task of growing and popularising baseball and softball in the country.

Meanwhile, Lemphane left after overseeing a milestone partnership in January between the LBSA and the Japan-Africa Baseball and Softball Foundation (J-ABS), aimed at developing and promoting the sport locally.

J-ABS is a non-profit organisation that offers programmes focused on youth development through Japanese-style baseball and softball, promoting values such as discipline, respect and justice.
