MASERU — Two men are recovering in hospital after they were beaten by an angry mob for allegedly robbing a supermarket in Pitseng, Leribe, on Friday last week.

According to police the duo, aged 34 and 37, respectively, pounced on a Chinese-owned supermarket.

They are alleged to have tied one of the employees to a gas cylinder before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money and some cigarettes.

Their luck however ran out when they were apprehended by some villagers on the same day.

Police spokesperson Masupha Masupha said the mob beat the suspects before handing them to the police.

“The suspects were admitted to hospital to be treated for the wounds they suffered when they were assaulted for resisting arrest,” Masupha said.

He added that police seized a 0.32 illegal firearm from the suspects.

In a separate incident, three men were arrested after they were found with goods police suspect to have been stolen.

The suspects aged between 20 and 25 were wanted in connection with armed robbery, house breaking and rape.

Police said the trio was found in possession of cell phones, lap tops and various other goods suspected to have been stolen.

The men are suspected to have raped some of the people they had robbed.

“They are still in police custody and they will appear in court,” Masupha said.
