MASERU Golf Club over the weekend hosted a golf tournament to commemorate His Majesty King Letsie III’s 59th birthday.

His Majesty was born David Mohato Bereng Seeiso at Scott Hospital in Morija on 1 July 1963.

The event, which was held at Maseru Golf Club, saw 42 golfers participating.

Speaking to the Lesotho Times, Maseru Golf Club captain, Thabang Khabo, said the tournament was a success and they were happy with the turnover.

He said a total M67 000 was raised from the event. This would be used for developmental activities at the club.

“We had a very successful event to celebrate the King’s 59th birthday,” Khabo said.

“Normally, in winter tournaments, the turnout is often small compared to summer. For this tournament we were expecting at least 36 golfers but we end up having 42 participants.

“We are also happy with the number of women who participated. We had 10 of them,” he said.

He said they were delighted with the response from sponsors namely; Maluti Mountain Breweries (MMB), Morena Sales and Mechandise, Vodacom and C-Pay.

Apart from celebrating the King’s birthday, Maseru Golf Club were also celebrating His Majesty’s Silver jubilee. He was coronated in 1997.

Khabo said next year they will donate proceeds from the tournament to charity.

MMB Legal and Cooperative Affairs Manager, ‘Mapulumo Mosisili, said they were happy to be part of the King’s birthday celebration.

Ms Mosisili said MMB would sponsor the tournament again next year.

“At Maluti Mountain Brewery, we are always happy to be aligned with events like this because they are key to us as a Lesotho company.

“We want to partner further with Maseru Golf Club and increase our visibility. We are going to sponsor the event again next year and even make it bigger,” she said.

Veteran golfer, Teboho Tlaitlai, was crowned champion of the tournament after garnering 39 points.

Talking to this publication, Tlaitlai said he was happy with the win.

He said the victory was a birthday present for him. He turned 70 over the weekend.

“This is very big to me as I was celebrating my 70th birthday on 15 July. What a pleasant birthday present.”

This was Tlaitlai’s second victory this year after winning the Maseru Golf Club monthly Mug Tournament last month.

Tlaitlai gave credit to the club for organising the tournament.

Letlafuoa Molapo finished second with 37 points while Ramosehlana Mapetla settled for third with the same number points.

Tlotliso Khabo and his father, Thabang, came fourth and fifth respectively after scoring 34 points each.
