LOCAL car spinners will on Saturday converge at Excel Garage Spinfield in Masianokeng to commemorate World AIDS day and raise funds for underprivileged families affected by HIV and AIDS.
Six spin and drift associations namely; Kalayali Motors, Slip Diff Association, Wild Cats, Maliso and Friends, Team Max and Tycoon, will take on their Free State counterparts at the event.
Organisers told the Weekender that the rationale behind the event is to commemorate the World AIDS Day by directing the proceeds of the event to the less fortunate.
One of the organisers, Kayalami’s Hlauli Lefatle, said although, this would be their first show, they hope to make it an annual event.
“Each of the participating associations has in the past hosted shows on its own but we realised that we would make a meaningful impact if we collaborated,” Lefatle said.
“Our craft is for adrenaline junkies but we are humans and part of the communities therefore we feel and see what others go through, so we found it fit to help the needy with the little we have.
“Most poverty-stricken families which are affected by the HIV and AIDS struggle to put food on the table. On one end they have to eat properly to sustain their livelihood while taking the medication and on the other end others are forced to take their pills without food which presents another threat to their lives.”
Lefatle said they will work closely with organisations such as Population Services International (PSI) and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF) since they have the right database for the people in need of assistance.
He said the event will also have free HIV testing and counselling for those who wish to test.
