Former Lioli coach, Lehlohonolo Thotanyana, is the frontrunner for the vacant Lesotho Football Association (Lefa) Technical Director (TD) position, the Lesotho Times can reveal.
Thotanyana (59) would replace Seephephe Matete, who is currently the national team interim coach.
The veteran coach is back at home after leaving South African National First Division side, Garankuwa United, where he was assistant to head-coach Leslie Notši.
Lefa secretary general, Mokhosi Mohapi, told the Lesotho Times this week that the appointment of a new TD was imminent.
“Like we said before, we have been working on having a Technical Director and we are very close to making the appointment,” Mohapi said, adding he could not reveal any name regarding the post before the contract is signed.
“I cannot disclose the name as we are finalising the paperwork,” Mohapi added.
Meanwhile, Thotanyana is highly rated and has had coaching spells with Lioli and Bantu, as well as coaching various national team coaches.
He won the league title with Lioli in 2012/13 and was also part of Seephephe Matete’s technical team which led the national under-20 side to their first African Youth Championship tournament held in Benin in 2005.
Thotanyana obtained his coaching badges in German in 1992, alongside current South Africa coach, Shakes Mashaba.
The veteran coach, alongside Notši, were also trained in Hungary in the 1990s.
