THE country’s most decorated football team, Matlama, has already started upgrading its squad for the 2020/21 season by signing two new players.
The Sea Point outfit has snatched Lioli midfielder Mohau Rammoneng and Thabo Matšoele from Liphakoe. Matlama has also tied down midfielder Teboho Lillane and a goalkeeper Monaheng Ramalefane by giving them a two-year extension of their contracts.
Matlama failed to defend their title finishing second behind archrivals Bantu who will be crowned next week.
Mido, as Rammoneng is affectionately known, joined Lioli in January this year ending his long stay at Liphakoe. Now after half a season at Tse Nala, he is now re-uniting with his long-time teammate, Matšoele.
Matlama spokesperson Tankiso Moletsane confirmed the signings saying they are preparing for a tough season.
“We have indeed signed Matšoele and Rammoneng and they have each signed a one-year contract while Shakes (Lillane) has extended his contract by two seasons.”
Moletsane said although the coronavirus break derailed their season, they are preparing to fight for the premier league title next season.
“We still hoped to chase Bantu all the way but the pal was derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, we are over that now and our focus is on next season where we are definitely going to challenge for honours.”
He said more signings would be announced in the coming days as they still need a goalkeeper and one more striker after offloading several players.
Matlama have parted ways with strikers Thapelo Tale, Desire Olomo, goalkeeper Kananelo Makhooane and midfielders Lekhanya Lekhanya and Reitumetsi Linkoane.
Moletsane said so far, they are happy with the players they have on their books and they hope they will enhance competition.
