THREE locals and a South African were recently pampered by the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC) after winning quiz competition on the Ultimate Ear Winter Whip Competition – a skiing contest that was held at the Lesotho Afriski Mountain Resort over the weekend.
Kenang Leluma, Tšepo Matlou, Lerato Pharoe (all Lesotho) and South Africa’s Pola Romeo were all pampered with a visit to the Lesotho Afriski Mountain Resort to watch snowboarders and skiers competing in the snow slopes at the Ultimate Ear Winter Whip Competition.
They had an experience at the highest pub in Africa that sits at 3222m above sea level.
The competition was open to everyone and it was aimed at promoting domestic and international tourism.
LTDC Public Relations Officer, Molapo Matela told the Weekender that the purpose of the competition was to create publicity around the country’s tourist resorts and therefore attract domestic and foreign tourists.
He further explained that tourism was one of the sectors that had been identified to spearhead the economic development of the country.
“It is through domestic tourism that Basotho will be get a chance to know more about their country so that they will be able to market it to other nations”, Matela said.
Matela further revealed that their mandate was to hold the competition on an annual basis to attract more foreign investors to the country.
He said increased investment would unlock opportunities for unemployed Basotho to get jobs and thus grow the country’s economy.
“Our expectation is to create awareness among Basotho by encouraging them to visit tourism resorts and know about their country so that they will be able to disseminate information that will advertise Lesotho to other nations”, Matela said.
He urged the communities to support tourism through tourism development activities as it had the potential to make immense contributes to the fiscus.
