MASERU — A Leribe-based police constable was fatally shot on Sunday by a suspect he was trying to arrest.

The constable was in the company of his two colleagues, a constable and an inspector, when he was killed.

The three had gone to Pitseng on Sunday morning to look for a suspected cattle rustler who had been on the run.

Police spokesperson Thato Ramarikhoane said the three had received information that the suspect was at a stokvel party in Pitseng.

“When police officers walked into the room where the party was being held the suspect started firing at them.

“One police constable was shot twice by the suspect who fled after the incident,” Ramarikhoane said.

The police constable was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival.

Police found two shells of a 7.65 firearm at the scene.

Ramarikhoane said a warrant of arrest has been issued for the suspect.

“People are warned not to go near him as he could be dangerous.

“They should inform the police about his whereabouts then police will be the ones who will arrest him.

“He might attack people who try to arrest him,” he said.
