THE Higherlife Foundation Lesotho – a social responsibility arm of ECONET Telecom Lesotho – has invited applications for the fourth cohort of the prestigious Moshoeshoe I Scholarship.

This merit-based academic initiative is named in honour of King Moshoeshoe I, the visionary founder of the Basotho nation. It offers support to academically gifted Basotho students under the age of 21 who are passionate about pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Applications for the 2025 intake opened on Monday this week and will close on 12 June 2025.

Since its launch in 2022, the scholarship has already changed the lives of 30 exceptional young Basotho, affectionately known as Moshoeshoelites—, who are currently studying at leading universities across Lesotho, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.

These include students like Meya Kabeli, who is pursuing a BA in Mechatronics at the University of Cape Town; Thulo Khuto, who is studying medicine at the University of Zimbabwe; Temoho Morobe, enrolled in Actuarial Science at the University of Lusaka; and Setsomi Molapo, who is reading for a degree in Computer Science and Physics at the National University of Lesotho.

Speaking about the programme’s impact, Puleng Mathabo Masoabi, Acting General Manager for Marketing Communications and Customer Experience at Econet Telecom Lesotho, highlighted how the scholarship goes beyond tuition support.

“The Moshoeshoe I Scholarship is more than just financial aid; it is a national investment in Lesotho’s future,” Ms Masoabi said.

Since 2022, we’ve proudly supported 30 brilliant minds who are already showing great promise in their fields. Through the Higherlife Foundation Lesotho, Econet has this past financial year alone spent over M2 million in tuition, stipends, and travel costs. A testament to our unwavering belief in the transformative power of education.”

Ms Masoabi also said the scholarship served as a tribute to King Moshoeshoe I’s enduring legacy.

“By nurturing academic excellence, we are shaping future leaders who will uphold his values and take Lesotho forward.”

Prospective applicants are encouraged to submit their applications early and ensure all required documents are in order. Full details on eligibility and the application process are available on the Higherlife Foundation Lesotho website.
