WHILE others yearn for the spotlight, Maseru-based DJ Turbo LS seeks to remain true his passion and steer clear of the well-trodden path.

Born Teboho Tšuluba, the Qoaling-based Turbo LS specialises in deep, soulful, jazzy and Afro House music.

It is all about the good groove, Turbo LS says, who has been an independent DJ since 2012.

“I have always loved music and would record songs from the radio using empty cassette tapes,” he said.

“It all clicked for me when I listened to radio anchor Thabbie aka Zipompe playing mixes from the likes of Pozzino, Excellent and the late Tsidoski.

“I draw inspiration from such veteran disc spinners as Karma K and DJ Hally, but music itself became an inspiration to me as a moral law that gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, charm and gaiety to life. I also look up to the record-breaking Black Coffee, DJ Spinna from the US and the UK’s Atjazz.”

According to Turbo LS, his craft is more than just about being popular but about passion.

“I just try to communicate emotions, give people goose bumps and help them discover music they have never heard before,” he said.

“Everybody can be a DJ nowadays so it is no longer a question of practice anymore but taste and courage; whether one can play at an event and be confident in his or her style while also being able to challenge the audience.”

Turbo LS has performed at a couple of local social events as well as private ones, sharing the stage with the likes of Mekonko, Hally, Thabbie and Razor Da Soul. He aspires to foray beyond Lesotho’s borders.
