South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has withdrawn from public engagements after returning from the BRICS summit in India, with the presidency saying he has been advised by doctors to rest and recover.
Ramaphosa, 73, returned home on Monday after attending the two-day BRICS gathering in New Delhi. His office said ministers would represent him at scheduled engagements where possible while he recuperates.
The development means South Africa’s two most senior political office-bearers are temporarily away from public duties. Deputy President Paul Mashatile is also recovering after undergoing a minor medical procedure.
Mashatile said this week that his recovery was progressing well and that he was regaining strength. He said he would continue resting on medical advice while delegated responsibilities were handled by his office in cooperation with government, business and other stakeholders.
The BRICS summit brought together leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, with discussions focused on inclusive global growth and developments in the Middle East.
The temporary absence of both Ramaphosa and Mashatile comes as South Africa moves into a busy political period ahead of local government elections scheduled for November 4.
