Agric Ministry launches youth empowerment programme

. . . 200 tractors procured, skills development initiative takes off

Seithati Motsoeneng

THE Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition has announced the procurement of 200 tractors alongside a comprehensive skills training programme aimed at empowering young Basotho, tackling youth unemployment, and promoting agricultural self-sufficiency.

This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to creating sustainable employment opportunities by equipping youth with practical agricultural skills.

The programme was officially launched this week, with registration now open to interested youths nationwide.

The registration period closes on 29 August 2025, after which selected trainees will begin an incubation phase scheduled for October.

The project will run for three months across three regions: North, South and Central; in Leribe, Maseru, and Mohale’s Hoek towns, respectively.

Designed not only to teach efficient tractor operation but also to develop entrepreneurial skills, the programme aims to empower young people to start their own agricultural ventures.

The Ministry of Agriculture spokesperson, Lereko Masupha, expressed optimism about the project’s potential impact.

He said upon completion, trainees will receive recognised licenses from the Department of Traffic as part of the programme’s commitment to equitable skills development.

“This initiative is part of our broader strategy to equip youth with relevant skills and tools to succeed in agriculture and ultimately respond to the Prime Minister’s call to address the youth unemployment crisis in the country,” said Mr Masupha.

“By providing training and access to modern farming equipment, we aim to reduce unemployment and promote self-reliance among our young people.”

Mr Masupha also said the Ministry’s investment in tractor training could open opportunities to government employment.

“We plan to absorb some of the most promising trainees as tractor operators in our new fleet of 200 tractors. This provides immediate job opportunities and encourages youths to see agriculture as a viable and rewarding career.”
