NEWLY elected Lesotho Boxing Association (LeBA) president Katiso Tšenoli has promised an improvement in the running of the sport following his election on Sunday.

Tšenoli succeeds 2006 Commonwealth Games silver medalist, Moses Kopo. Tšenoli is also former LeBA public relations officer under Kopo leadership.

He told the Lesotho Times this week that he would strive to unite the boxing fraternity.

“First of all, we are looking forward to uniting and end the disputes that the sport has endured for a long time,” Tšenoli said.

“We must meet with team’s representatives to plan the way forward. Along the way, we are going to ensure that we meet frequently with the teams and the executive will be expected to give reports of the committee’s activities.

“The outgoing committee did well but lacked effective communication and I think we have learnt a lesson.”

He said the instability in the previous committee could also be attributed to the failure to communicate the associations’ financial situation.

“We must be accountable and ensure that our members are always informed about our financial status. Starting from now, we must tell them that there is no money in the association’s accounts,” he added.

Tšenoli also said they intend to increase the number of tournaments across the country to ensure boxers remain active.

He added that they would also send out representatives outside the country to attend clinics for capacitation.

“The number of our internationally recognized coaches has recently increased but we still must add more qualified coaches. We must also boost our refereeing department with qualified referees,” he said.

Tšenoli also spoke on the election of a coach saying that was done to ensure that coaches are represented in the executive committee.

“That portfolio is meant to ensure that coaches are represented in the executive committee but that doesn’t mean the incumbent will coach the national teams. There is a coaches’ board and a coach for a specific tournament is selected by that board,” Tšenoli said.
