TELECOMMUNICATIONS powerhouse, Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL), has expanded its network infrastructure with the installation of three new telecommunications towers as part of efforts to improve connectivity and promote digital inclusion across the country.
The latest expansion includes the Lejoe-Motho Tower in Leribe, the Moteng Tower in Butha-Buthe and the Maama Tower in Maseru, extending the company’s network footprint from Tele to Mechechane. The investment is expected to improve network coverage, increase capacity and enhance service quality for surrounding communities.
Reliable internet and mobile connectivity have become increasingly important in supporting access to education, healthcare, business opportunities and financial services, particularly as demand for digital services continues to grow.
Acting General Manager for Marketing Communications and Customer Experience, Puleng ‘Mathabo Masoabi, said the latest investment demonstrates Econet’s commitment to improving customer experience while supporting Lesotho’s digital transformation.
“Every new Econet network site brings more than improved coverage. It creates opportunities for learning, business growth, financial inclusion and stronger community connections. As Econet, we remain committed to investing in infrastructure that keeps Basotho connected wherever they are,” Ms Masoabi said.
She said the company was equally concerned about protecting telecommunications infrastructure, describing network towers as critical national assets that require the collective support of all stakeholders.
Ms Masoabi welcomed the recent arrest by the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) of a suspect allegedly linked to the vandalism and theft of Econet infrastructure in Butha-Buthe.
“We commend the LMPS for their swift action. This infrastructure is a critical national asset, and protecting it requires collaboration between law enforcement agencies, local authorities, communities, government and the private sector. Every tower protected is another community kept connected,” she said.
Beyond expanding its network, ETL is also focusing on customer education to ensure users are equipped to make informed decisions when using digital services.
Ms Masoabi said digital literacy remains an important part of the company’s strategy as more Basotho embrace online services.
“Our responsibility goes beyond providing connectivity. Econet Telecom Lesotho remains committed to empowering customers with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and confidently use the digital services available to them,” she said.
The telecommunications company is also stepping up public awareness campaigns on cybersecurity and fraud prevention, particularly as its Re ‘Moja loyalty campaign continues.
Customers have been urged to remain vigilant against fraudsters who may impersonate the company to obtain confidential information.
“Econet will never ask customers to disclose their PINs, passwords or One-Time Passwords (OTPs). We encourage customers to verify information through our official channels and report suspicious activity immediately,” Ms Masoabi said.
She also encouraged parents and guardians to play an active role in promoting responsible internet use among children as access to digital platforms continues to expand.
“The internet presents tremendous opportunities for learning and development, but it also calls for shared responsibility. By teaching our children safe online habits and maintaining open conversations about their digital experiences, we can help them benefit from technology while staying protected,” she said.
Ms Masoabi said expanding network coverage, protecting telecommunications infrastructure and improving digital literacy remain central to Econet’s efforts to build a more connected, secure and digitally empowered Lesotho.
