Battle for Top Four intensifies

MASERU — The battle for a Top Four finish goes to the wire this weekend with giants Lioli taking on Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) in Teyateyaneng on Sunday.

Fourth-placed Matlama will take a short trip to Lesotho Correctional Services ground for an encounter against league champions LCS while Bantu will host Joy in Mafeteng.

This certainly promises to be an explosive weekend for the premier league as these clubs seek to secure a Top Four finish.

Lioli coach, Katiso Mojakhomo, said he was expecting a good result in Teyateyaneng.

“The squad is very motivated after last Saturday’s 2-1 morale boosting win over Matlama and we have to complete the mission by beating LDF on Sunday,” Mojakhomo said.

“LDF have an advantage because they are already in second position and a draw on Sunday will guarantee them a top four spot.”

He added that Lioli needed to win the match more than their opponents who are four points ahead of them.

“That is why I think it will be an interesting game as we are both fighting for a top four spot and it feels like a final to us,” Mojakhomo said.

He said last Saturday’s win over Matlama had brought confidence into his team.

“We have raised the hopes of our supporters after moving up to fifth.

“The plan now is to continue with our winning streak,” he said.

In Maseru, Matlama defender, Thapelo Mokhehle, said they were expecting a tough match against the champions.

“It will be tough playing the champions. They have clinched the league for the second season and a win over us will be a bonus for them,” Mokhehle said.

The correctional services side continued with their good form last weekend when they hammered Maduma 5-1.

“We have to go to their ground on Sunday and try to spoil the celebrations,” said Mokhehle.

Elsewhere, in Mafeteng, Bantu coach, Ndebele Taole’s charges are also eyeing a top four finish.

Another interesting contest is on the wrong side of the table where both Maduma and Likhopo have to protect their top-flight status.

Majantja are the only side so far to have been relegated.

The Mohale’s Hoek-based side play their last premier league fixture of this campaign against Likhopo.

Premier league public relations officer, Lehlohonolo Matlosa, on Tuesday confirmed the relegation of Majantja and said the other relegation spot will be confirmed after the Sunday matches.
