BUSINESS mogul and philanthropist, Mamotake “Lady M” Matekane, has officially launched her women’s clothing line, the Lady M Collection, marking a new chapter in her career.
The launch came shortly after her return from New York where she was awarded the International Leadership Award by the United Nations in recognition of her work in youth, women and leadership programmes through her role at the Waterlight Save Initiative (WSI).
Ms Matekane’s clothing line was unveiled at a glittering event held at The Market Restaurant on Tuesday, featuring a captivating runway show that introduced her couture designs, aimed at redefining fashion standards for Basotho women and beyond.
More than just a business venture, the collection reflects Lady M’s passion for empowering women through fashion and her commitment to promoting local talent and craftsmanship.
She partnered with Lesotho-born designer, Georges Malelu, who has dressed global icons such as American musician Beyoncé and 2019 Miss South Africa and Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi. Together, they aim to offer sophisticated, high-quality designs for women who value elegance, comfort, and individuality.
Ms Matekane’s entry into the fashion industry is driven by resilience, determination, and a pursuit of excellence. Known internationally for her philanthropic work and achievements, she said her inspiration stems from a desire to encourage women to embrace their uniqueness while maintaining modesty.
“In my journey, I faced numerous challenges, but with faith and perseverance, I was able to overcome them,” she said.
“This collection reflects that journey—it celebrates women who want to look beautiful, feel empowered, and stay true to themselves. Fashion is not just about appearance; it is about expressing identity, elegance, and strength.”
She also acknowledged her family’s role in her success, particularly her father-in-law, Prime Minister Sam Matekane.
“I am grateful for his unwavering support and belief in me. I chose to embrace the opportunity I was given and make it count,” she said.
A standout feature of the collection is its focus on inclusivity and personalised tailoring. Each piece is designed to suit different body types and preferences, allowing women to express themselves comfortably and confidently. The designs balance style and modesty, catering to women who seek elegance without compromising their values.
Speaking to the Lesotho Times on the sidelines of the event, Deputy Prime Minister Nthomeng Majara praised the collection for celebrating womanhood through relatable and wearable designs.
“Unlike some collections that feel overly abstract, this one speaks to real women. I found it easy to connect with,” she said.
She added that the garments are practical and comfortable, making them suitable for both office wear and special occasions.
