LIA and LESPA forge strategic partnership

THE Lesotho Institute of Accountants (LIA) and the Lesotho School Principals Association (LESPA) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) aimed at strengthening school leadership through improved financial integrity and professional accountability.

The agreement establishes a strategic partnership to equip school principals with specialised financial management skills, moving beyond symbolic commitments to create a practical framework for sustainable educational development.

Speaking at the signing ceremony held yesterday at the Transformation Resource Centre (TRC) premises in Maseru, LIA Chief Executive Officer, Malisebo Ntlhokoe, said the partnership is anchored on transparency and accountability.

Ms Ntlhokoe said school leaders were entrusted with managing critical national resources, adding that the MoA would give LESPA members direct access to LIA’s expertise in governance, ethical practices, and financial stewardship.

“Today is not just about an agreement; it is about charting a bold path forward for education, leadership, and accountability in Lesotho. We are witnessing unity and vision between LIA and the schools of Lesotho,” Ms Ntlhokoe said.

“This partnership is built on trust, shared responsibility, and a commitment to excellence in education and leadership.”

She emphasised that the MoA represented more than a formal agreement, describing it as a commitment to empower schools, strengthen leadership, and ensure that resources were managed with integrity and purpose.

“Together, we are laying the foundation for innovation, collaboration, and financial stewardship that will benefit generations of learners. We are here to transform and inspire principals, teachers, and students to reach higher and achieve more,” Ms Ntlhokoe said.

She added that effective resource management was central to transformation in the education sector.

“When resources are managed wisely, every investment becomes an opportunity, every budget a tool for growth, and every cent a seed for future success,” she said.

Ms Ntlhokoe further stressed that strong leadership went beyond vision and must be underpinned by accountability.

“Proper financial management ensures that schools are sustainable, projects are impactful, and communities can trust that every decision is made responsibly. This agreement reflects our commitment to transparency, efficiency, and the highest standards of governance,” she said.

LESPA president, Mathafeng Moteuli, described the partnership as a timely response to the complex challenges facing modern schools.

He said improving financial prudence would position schools to deliver quality education and create environments where both teachers and learners can thrive.

“Today represents more than the signing of a document; it marks the beginning of a strategic partnership grounded in excellence, accountability, trust, and the sustainable development of education in Lesotho,” Mr Moteuli said.

He said the role of school principals extended beyond instructional leadership to include financial management and accountability, especially in an increasingly complex education environment.

“These responsibilities demand not only dedication but also specialised knowledge and professional support,” he said.

Mr Moteuli added that the collaboration with LIA would provide principals with access to training programmes, capacity-building initiatives, and advisory support in financial management and governance.

“The challenges we face require level-headed and well-equipped principals. Through this partnership, we anticipate strengthening the financial stewardship of our schools,” he said.

He emphasised that strong financial management was a cornerstone of effective school leadership.

“When resources are managed prudently and transparently, schools are better positioned to support teaching and learning and create environments where both educators and learners can succeed,” he said.

Mr Moteuli also highlighted that the agreement reflected a shared commitment to professionalism and ethical conduct.

“Just as accountants are guided by principles of integrity and accountability, school leaders must uphold the highest ethical standards. By working together, our institutions will reinforce these values across both sectors,” he said.

He commended LIA for its commitment to supporting the education sector and contributing to national human capital development.

“As we move forward, let us ensure that this MoA becomes a living framework that delivers tangible impact. We must monitor progress and continuously strengthen this partnership for the benefit of our schools and the nation,” Mr Moteuli said.
