MASERU — Serumula Performing Arts Academy found the going tough at the Sedibeng Choral Music Festival held in South Africa on Sunday.
They came eighth in the standard section of the competition where they were competing against 25 other choirs from South Africa.
Serumula conductor, Lehlomela Tente, told the Weekender the adjudicators had commented on the quality of the choristers’ voices.
He said Serumula had younger members than other choirs and their voices were not as mature as those of their competitors.
“The adjudicators commented that our sopranos are not mature enough for the prescription we were competing in,” Tente said. “They advised us that we need to train our voices hard to tune them for any kind of music that may be prescribed for competitions.”
Tente said although they came eighth, spirits in the choir were still very high for upcoming choral festivals.
“Now that we know that we need to strengthen our voices, we are going to continue holding workshops for the choristers on singing, preparation for competitions and presentations,” he said.
The workshops are aimed at giving choristers academic background and equipping them with general music knowledge.
