A QUARTET of Basotho golfers is set to depart for Botswana on Sunday to participate in the 2025 Africa Golf Confederation (AGC) Region 5 games.
Scheduled from May 12 to 17 at the Stanbic Bank Gaborone Golf Club, the team is led by the talented captain Tlotliso Khabo, who will be competing in this tournament for the second time, having previously represented Lesotho in Namibia in 2019.
Joining him are Realeboha Rakobuoa, Thabo Kolane, and Mlaba Linakane.
The Lesotho team will compete against teams from Angola, eSwatini, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Speaking to the Lesotho Times yesterday, team manager and coach, Ernest Moloi, expressed confidence in the players’ readiness to represent their country, despite acknowledging that nations like South Africa and Zimbabwe have more advanced golf programs, making them the favourites.
Moloi said that preparation time had been limited, as training only began in March, but he believes the players are prepared to give their best. He emphasized the importance of gaining experience by competing against stronger teams. “This year, the team has chosen younger players, with Khabo being the oldest at 34, while the others are all under 25,” Moloi said.
Moloi explained that previous teams often included players around 50 years old, which did not contribute to the development and continuity of the sport. The trip to Botswana is funded by Vodacom Lesotho and Maseru Golf Club (MGC).
