MASERU — Kwaito star Manyofi has bounced back onto the music scene with a 10-track album titled Money Making Machine.
The album features hits like Sesfikile and E e hle which are receiving airplay on local and community radio stations in South Africa.
Having been away from the charts and the music scene since 2009 following a road accident which left him seriously injured, Manyofi told the Weekender he had decided to drop a more personal production to mark his comeback.
“After my accident in 2009 I lost interest in music and my creative side just vanished. This marks my re-entry after a two-year absence.
“The album captures and relates the pain I felt during the period because I couldn’t produce anything due to the injuries. At the same time my fans kept asking for another album,” Manyofi said.
Born Charles Nkheloane, Manyofi was a member of a musical group called Les Mastaz in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Les Mastaz made waves with two albums titled Manyofi and Bana 4 Life.
Manyofi decided to go solo as a kwaito artist in 2007.
The talented artiste said he worked with two local disc jockeys, Gava and Allegro, on the new offering.
“Although the album is sad and more personal, it is a perfect summer album which has dance-along tracks,” he said.
“I worked with a number of local and South African DJs and produced 43 songs but only the best 10 tracks were selected for the new album.”
The new offering is expected to hit the streets in November in time for the festive party fever, Manyofi said.
The artiste said before the accident in February 2009 he was preparing to release his second album.
“I worked on this album for two years but I had to hold its release in 2009 after the accident,” he said.
Manyofi said he is only releasing it at this time because “my biggest competitor, Stlofa, is ‘dyingdown’ so it is my time to rise”.
“He released a very hot album and it was doing very well on the market. I figured I should wait for a perfect time to emerge and this is the ideal time,” he said.
Manyofi said the album will be promoted throughout the country and in South Africa.
“I have my work associates in South Africa who will be handling the promotional tours and marketing of Money Making Machine,” he said.
“I have been releasing and promoting in Lesotho and this time I am expanding my horizons to South Africa because their kwaito industry has lost the spark and strength.”
Manyofi made waves with his debut album, Black Loxion Lawyer, in 2007. The album sold over 18 000 copies in two months in Lesotho.
Manyofi is also a music producer and DJ.
