MASERU — The national Under-15 team leave the country today for a five-nation tournament in Botswana this weekend.
The tournament begins tomorrow and ends on Sunday.
The team will return home on Monday.
Lesotho’s 18-man squad was selected during an inter-district tournament held during the Easter holiday.
The countries that have confirmed their participation in this tournament are Namibia, Botswana, South Africa and Lesotho.
At the time of going to print Ghana, the fifth team, had not yet confirmed their participation in the youth tournament.
Lesotho’s head of delegation Thabo Pule expressed confidence that they would do well in Botswana.
He said Under-15 coach Motlalepula Majoro was leading the best team that Lesotho could assembly.
“I am certain that we are going to win these games,” Pule said. “The players we have selected and their coach are super. They are our best.”
Lesotho Football Association (LEFA) technical director Seephephe Matete said the purpose of the tournament was to give players international exposure at a young age.
“The purpose is just to develop young players and to make sure that they have international exposure and experience before they turn 17,” he said.
As part of LEFA’s development programme, Matete said they were supposed to hold at least three local youth tournaments if funds permitted.
“We are supposed to hold at least three tournaments (like the one on Easter) but resources cannot allow us,” he said.
