A 37-year-old teacher from Mafeteng was arrested this week for allegedly having sex with his 17-year-old student.

According to police spokesperson Clifford Molefe, the incident allegedly took place in July this year.

“The 37-year-old is a teacher at St Theresa High School in Thaba-Tseka. He was expected to appear in court today because being in a relationship with a minor constitutes statutory rape,” Senior Inspector Molefe said yesterday.

Snr Insp Molefe said the police eventually arrested the suspect after receiving the greenlight from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“As a civil servant, there were legal procedures we had to follow and now that we have been given the go ahead, we have officially charged the man with statutory rape,” he said.

Snr Insp Molefe said both the suspect and victim claimed to have been in a relationship.

“But still, being in a relationship and having sex with a minor is a crime hence the arrest,” he added.
