THE district of Thaba-Tseka is set to host its inaugural heritage festival from 30 September to 2 October 2016.
According to the festival’s organiser, Phokane Tsietsi, the event is meant to coincide with Lesotho’s golden jubilee celebrations and showcase the district’s tourism attractions. Lesotho attained independence from Britain on 4 October 1966.
“Thaba-Tseka is usually left behind during various activities held in the country, yet it is the centre of the country and very rich in terms of culture and tourism attractions,” he told the Weekender this week.
“A few examples I can highlight are the Lesotho Highlands Water Project and mohair farmers who made Lesotho the second largest producer of mohair in the world.”
Tsietsi said the festival was also meant to promote local businesses.
“We aim to promote cooperatives and youth development organisations during the three days of the festival by offering them a platform to showcase their wares,” he said.
“The festival is meant to be an annual event which promotes the Thaba-Tseka district and country at large. We will also hold quarterly shows organised by young people as a build up to the main event.”
A number of fun-filled activities have been lined up during the fiesta such as horse riding, hiking, crafts market, archery and quad biking among others. Local apparel firm Kermit Designs is scheduled to host a fashion show sponsored by Aranda Textiles.
The entertainment line-up will encompass Bhudaza, Zagro Deejays, Davertz, Thizozo, Lala, Hatlane, Lesoetsa, Ragga Vybz and Khalala Tsa Orange Farm among others.
“In addition to promoting local musicians and crafters, the festival will also feature a photography competition by the Peace Corps whose winner will be crowned at the festival,” he said.
“Our interest is not to make money with this festival, hence admission will be free. The aim is to promote Basotho businesses by providing a platform for them to showcase their various services and products.”
Tsietsi also revealed they partnered Basotho Enterprise Development Corporation, Econet Telecom Lesotho, the Lesotho Highlands Development Authority, Alliance Insurance, Maluti Mountain Brewery, Lesotho Funeral Services and Thaba-Tseka district administrators among others in mentoring young people.
“We have partnered with a lot of businesses in the country so they can assist us in developing the youth through mentorship programmes,” he said.
“The aim is to empower youths with skills to start and operate their own businesses from people who have seen it all.”
