THE Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) is investigating a case in which a soldier was burnt to death in a house he was renting in Khubetsoana, Maseru on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent, Clifford Molefe yesterday told the Lesotho Times that police received information that a man had been burnt to death in a house in Khubetsoana.
SSP Molefe said upon arrival, the police discovered the charred remains of the man in the house.
“We found the body of male person who seemed to have been burnt on his bed,” SSP Molefe said, adding, “However, we are still investigating the cause of the fire that burnt him to death”.
Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) spokesperson Brigadier Ntlele Ntoi confirmed to the Lesotho Times at the scene of the incident on Tuesday that the deceased was indeed a soldier.
He however, said the police were “already conducting an investigation to find out what might have caused his death”.
“The man was supposed to be at work today (Tuesday) but after his bosses realised that he was not present, they searched for him and some LDF members came to his place.
“It was upon arrival that they discovered that he was burnt in the house.”
Some of the deceased’s neighbours said they last saw him on Sunday.
“I last saw him on Sunday and we had a small chat as usual,” said one neighbour who refused to be identified.
“I did not know that he had been burnt in the house and I only became aware of the situation after the soldiers entered the house and alerted neighbours that the man was dead in the house.
“It was then that I realised that there was something strange on the windows. The windows were dark although they were not burnt,” he said.
