THE choral group of the Serumula Performing Arts Academy (SPAA) is set to perform Mozart’s 12 Mass Concert at Lesotho College of Education on Sunday.

The SPAA Choral Group is one of the biggest harmonic groups in the country. Formed in 2007, the choir has represented the country in South Africa and clinched the National Choir Festival competition in 2013. They are also the current Lengau Choral Music Association champions.

Added to that, SPAA Choral Group won a number of local awards which include the African Melody Festival in 2013.

According to SPAA Public Relations Officer Sam Letima, they normally hold an Easter show but were compelled to postpone it to this Sunday.

“We normally have a show around the Easter holiday period, but due to unforeseen circumstances, we will hold it this weekend to allay the concerns raised by fans who had not been served this year,” said Letima.

“We normally align ourselves with the Easter celebrations and Jesus, which is why we will be performing songs from Mozart’s 12 Mass book.”

Mozart’s 12 Mass composition includes violas and 12 wind instruments and was composed by Mozart in 1791 for the great mass but was completed by his protégé Franz Sussmayr after the master passed on. “These are the songs normally sung during Catholic masses. Although in Latin, we understand that they glorify Jesus, ask for His mercy and proclaim His holiness,” he said.

“We have performed one or two songs from the book in different competitions, but this time we will perform all the 12 pieces.”

Letima also revealed that the group will also be performing tracks composed by their conductor, Lehlomela Tente, adding that Sunday’s show would be a “perfect opportunity” for fans to come and listen to some of SPAA’s creative works.
