MASERU — South African poet and musician, Ntsiki Mazwai, is set to perform at a poetry competition at Molengoane Lodge on Saturday.

Mazwai — popularly known as the Queen of the Streets — will be performing alongside local poets Lyrical Bacteria, Matt Masiu Nkofo, Tsely Mohapeloa, Zee and Dee.

At least 20 poets have expressed interest in taking part in the event.

‘Maphano Mohapi told the Weekender that 13 finalists had been shortlisted to take part in the contest.

The competition was open to everyone and ran under three categories — empowerment, prejudices and politics.

Mohapi said the aim of the competition was to celebrate arts and culture in Lesotho.

“Basotho don’t like reading, let alone writing, so the competition is aimed at celebrating and promoting the writing art,” she said.

The competition allowed participants to write in whatever language they felt comfortable, Mohapi said.

The finalists would be reciting their poems on Saturday and will be judged on presentation, projection, creativity and confidence.

The winner will walk away M800 richer with the second position winner pocketing M500.

The winner of the third prize will win M300 and some hampers.

“Winners will get a chance to be booked for future poetry events because the aim is to uplift the poetry industry and unearth new talent,” Mohapi said.

There will also be drama, dance, fashion, fine arts displays.
