MASERU – The Minister of Social Development’s private secretary, Lebohang Mokone, 40, was yesterday arrested on suspicion that he had used fake certificates to secure the job.
Mokone literally fled from this paper’s cameras yesterday afternoon at the Maseru Magistrate’s Court, where the police had taken him to register the case.
He is set to appear in court today.
Contacted for comment, Assistant Police Commissioner, ‘Matšepo Soko, who is handling the case, said she could not give further details as she was out of town.
Mokone was investigated last year for allegedly faking a Theology degree certificate which he claimed to have obtained from St Joseph’s Seminary in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Investigators working on the case established that there was only one institute of higher education offering theology in Pietermaritzburg, the St Joseph’s Theological Institute.
The probe also established that at the time the suspect claims to have obtained the degree, the university in question was only issuing theology diplomas.
It is also suspected that Mokone used fake certificates to land his previous job as a teacher at one high school in Mohale’s Hoek.
He is said to have disappeared from the school immediately after investigations started.
Efforts to get a comment from the Minister of Social Development, ‘Matebatso Doti, were unsuccessful as she said she was in a constituency meeting.
