SOUTH African female disc spinners Thobs and Soul Bee and their local counterparts Lym, Lady Dee and El Asla will tomorrow headline the She Rocks! Music event at the Cuban Linx in downtown Maseru.
The show is aimed at showcasing and promoting the talents of female disc spinners who have generally been forced to play second fiddle to their male counterparts who often receive more bookings to perform at various fora.
The female House music disc spinners will be supported by their male counterparts including Agent K, Mekonko, Tshepzadj, Tidoz, Khotso Molapo, Zakes and Hlonifonique.
Agent K said that “the dee-jaying industry is often regarded as a man’s world hence it is in very rare cases that females DJs get to be booked for events that happen in the country”.
“Being sidelined does not mean they are incapable of playing good music so through this show we want to prove that they can play well even against their male counterparts.
“She Rocks! is a long term project which will revolve around different themes aimed at empowering female DJs. This one is a sensual night so patrons should dress elegantly,” he said.
He said they also aimed to train as many female DJs in order to empower them.
“I have been working on promoting female DJs since 2016 and this time it’s a team effort with my fellow male DJs who will be playing on Friday.
“We aim to empower as many ladies as possible and those that wish to learn should not hesitate to contact us,” he said.
For her part, DJ Lym said the project would help end their grief of being neglected by promoters.
“We have been complaining as female DJs of being sidelined at events probably because they think we are not capable.
“The She Rocks! platform will help us showcase and expose our talents to different promoters. The South Africans will also recognise our expertise and hopefully they will also invite us to their events.
“I also believe that our profiles will flourish and that will in turn inspire other ladies who wish to be DJs,” Lym told the Weekender.
