MASERU — The Chinese Embassy in Lesotho yesterday gave M150 000 to the office of the First Lady to help orphans and vulnerable children throughout the country.

The Chinese Ambassador, Dingxian Hu, said the donation was a token of appreciation for the projects being undertaken by the First Lady’s office.

“Although the sum is not a lot of money, this donation shows love and care from our embassy to the less fortunate children,” Hu said.

He said they were impressed by the charity projects being done by the First Lady, ‘Mathato Mosisili, hence their decision to assist.

“We will continue to support these projects from time to time.”

The director in the First Lady’s Office, ‘Mapeo Mtlanyane, said the funds will be used to buy sanitary towels for needy school girls.

She said the office would also buy sewing machines and build shacks for young people to start small businesses.

Mosisili thanked the Chinese embassy for the donation saying the money will go a long way in making a difference to the lives of vulnerable children in the country.

“Half a bread is better than having no bread at all. For my office it’s a lot of money so much that if used productively, it will make a difference to the lives of the needy,” Mosisili said.

She thanked the embassy for responding to their request for assistance.

The donation was coming at a time when assistance was dwindling owing to the global economic recession.

Mosisili pledged that her office would account for every cent spent.
