IN an effort to enhance cybersecurity, insurance giant, Alliance Insurance Company, has donated 14 desktop computers and 14 laptops to the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS).
The handover ceremony took place on Tuesday at the police headquarters in Maseru.
The event was attended by the LMPS command, police officers of various ranks, and staff from Alliance Insurance.
In his opening remarks, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) – Strategic Management and Support Services, Sera Makharilele, described the occasion as momentous, highlighting the importance of the donation in supporting LMPS as they tackle the rising challenge of cybersecurity threats.
“As we navigate these challenging times, it is crucial to recognise and support the LMPS in achieving its goals,” DCP Makharilele stated.
“As countries develop, crime rates tend to increase, necessitating well-resourced police forces.”
He praised Alliance for their ongoing support, noting that the relationship between the company and LMPS has deep roots.
Alliance Insurance Chief Financial Officer, Mohapinyane Taole, expressed his appreciation for the partnership with LMPS, which he described as focused on the shared goal of prioritising the safety and well-being of Basotho.
“As a company that handles substantial financial transactions, we recognise the need for strong collaboration with LMPS to combat crime,” Mr Taole said.
“The equipment donated by Alliance is expected to enhance the LMPS’s ability to perform their duties effectively and contribute to the overall fight against crime in Lesotho.”
Mr Taole said Alliance intended to continue supporting LMPS, challenging other private sector companies to follow suit in addressing the various needs of the police force.
Alliance’s Head of Marketing, Makeabetsoe Mabaleha, announced upcoming initiatives, including the construction of a new police station at Ha-Palama and the refurbishment of the police’s fire engines.
For his part, Police Commissioner Borotho Matsoso, expressed gratitude for Alliance’s generosity, noting that the donation would significantly aid the police in their daily operations, particularly in combating the rising crime rates. He also highlighted the challenging conditions faced by officers at the Ha-Palama station, who have been working without proper shelter.
Commissioner Matsoso called on other companies to emulate Alliance’s support, citing the importance of collective efforts in ensuring the safety and security of Basotho. He also urged the public to guide their children away from criminal behaviour.
