AHF Lesotho Marks International Condom Day with Calls for Action, Awareness, and Empowerment

As Lesotho commemorated International Condom Day, leaders and health officials reaffirmed their dedication to HIV prevention, youth empowerment, and dismantling the stigma associated with condom usage.

Founded by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHAF), the day aims to normalize conversations about condom use, remove stigma, and empower individuals to make informed choices.

During a commemorative event attended by government representatives, civil society, and community members, Minister of Health Selibe Mochoboroane remarked on the notable decline in condom utilization over the years.

He particularly noted the sluggish adoption of female condoms in comparison to their male counterparts. “The prevalence of condom use has significantly diminished compared to a decade ago,” he stated.

He pointed out that Basotho have become complacent regarding condom use following considerable advancements in the battle against HIV. He urged the populace to revert to their previous practices of condom usage, as they are comprehensive tools for sexual health prevention.

In an address, the Country Program Manager of AHF Lesotho, Nthoesele Letoao, emphasized that International Condom Day is both symbolic and practical. “It reminds us that HIV prevention remains a shared responsibility, and condoms are one of the most effective tools we have—affordable, accessible, and proven to reduce transmission,” she stated.

The Country Program Manger, also noted that while Lesotho has made significant progress in HIV treatment and viral suppression, prevention must remain at the forefront of the national response. “We cannot treat our way out of this epidemic without preventing new infections,” she added.

Ms Letoao stressed that in Lesotho, despite efforts to expand access to free condoms and testing services, social barriers, misinformation, and stigma continue to hinder uptake—particularly among young people.

“Access alone is not enough. “We must address the social and cultural barriers that prevent young people from protecting themselves,” she said.

Reaffirming AHF’s commitment, Ms Letoao highlighted ongoing partnerships with government, civil society, and community groups to amplify prevention efforts. From health facilities to taxi ranks and community gatherings, the Foundation is working tirelessly to reach every corner of the country with vital services and education.

She also acknowledged the crucial role of youth in shaping a safer future. “Young people are not just beneficiaries—they are leaders in this fight. Your voices and choices matter,” she said.

She reaffirmed AHF’s dedication to working alongside all stakeholders to reach the 2030 goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat. “Together, we can prevent new infections, protect our future, and build a healthier Lesotho,” she declared.

AHF Champion and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly advised the youth to consistently utilize condoms to avert numerous sexual health issues, while firmly denouncing any condonation of sexual activities among minors.

She urged young individuals to practice abstinence, emphasizing that engaging in sexual activities often yields detrimental consequences, particularly for young women, who may face unintended pregnancies and resort to unsafe abortion methods.

“Sex should not be perceived as a form of entertainment for children; it imposes unnecessary financial burdens on the government as a consequence of sexual activity,”she articulated.

She advocated for enhanced accessibility to female condoms, noting that the most widely utilized contraceptives are male condoms. She pointed out the necessity of addressing the issue of the “pink tax,”which unfairly burdens women.

“There exists a prevailing notion that products are often provided at no cost for men, while women must pay a premium. We must alter this narrative by ensuring the availability of female condoms in all essential locations,”she asserted.
