DESPITE efforts by the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) to root out corruption within its ranks, police inspired crimes continue unabated.
In less than a month, more than ten police officers have been dismissed due to their involvement in criminal activities.
In a recent development, Police Constable Thabo Lebamang (47) stationed at Lithabaneng Police Station in Maseru, was charged alongside three other suspects in connection with a robbery.
Lebamang appeared in the Mafeteng Magistrates Court on 30 August 2024 with the trio; Seabata Makhetha (32), Mohapi Makhethi (39), and Katleho Ralenkoane (30), for allegedly stealing M180 000 in Mafeteng.
According to Detective Police Constable Rethabile Makoanyane of the Mafeteng Police Station CID, the trio arrived at the victim’s home in the early hours, posing as police officers and even presenting identification.
“The trio knocked on the door, and when the victim peeped through the window, they showed her police ID. She then opened the door,” DPC Makoanyane said.
Upon entering, the trio, who were heavily armed, demanded a Nike travel bag, which the terrified victim quickly handed over.
The suspects fled into the night, heading towards Maseru, leaving the victim in shock. The case was reported to the Mafeteng Police on 26 August 2024.
Police investigations revealed that the suspects learned about the money and swiftly planned the robbery under false pretences.
“The police managed to arrest the four men in different locations, including Lebamang, who was found in possession of a firearm used during the crime,” DPC Makoanyane added.
They appeared before the magistrate court on the same day and were granted bail of M1000 each, which they paid. They are scheduled to reappear in court today.
According to Police Spokesperson Senior Superintendent Mpiti Mopeli, harsh measures will be taken against Lebamang for his involvement in criminal activities while serving in the police force.
“Given Lebamang’s actions, the Commissioner of Police has the authority to expel him. However, he is yet to act on the issue,” SSP Mopeli said.
