MASERU — Lesotho’s political party leaders met on Monday for a prayer meeting where they implored God to unify the Basotho nation during the upcoming general election.
The prayer meeting was organised by the Christian Council of Lesotho (CCL).
CCL spokesperson Potjo Potjo told the Lesotho Times that the church felt the need to pray together with party leaders in a bid to halt post-election quarrels.
“The CCL has realised that during and after elections conflicts arise and sometimes they get out of control,” Potjo said.
“Therefore, the council felt the urge to hold a prayer meeting with party leaders to ask God to bless this year’s election and unify the nation so that should there be any discontent a Godly solution could be pursued.”
Potjo said the CCL has held a similar meeting with the Independent Electoral Commission to find if it was ready to hold a free and fair election.
The prayer meeting was led by Catholic Archbishop Tlali Lerotholi, Anglican Bishop Adam Taaso, Lesotho Evangelical Church President Reverend Tšeliso Masemene and the African Methodist Episcopal Bishop Daniel Rafube.
The general election is likely to be held in May.
The CCL was at the forefront of mediating between opposition parties and the government over the allocation of proportional representation seats following the 2007 general election.
