MASERU — The Maseru District Football Association’s executive committee is living on borrowed time with affiliated clubs saying they are fed up with the incumbent office-bearers.
All B Division and lower leagues in Lesotho fall under district committees.
At least 40 of the 60-plus clubs, including women’s teams, affiliated to the Maseru association met on Sunday to plot the ouster of the district’s executive committee which they accuse of incompetence.
The teams also allege the committee has failed to account for the organisation’s funds as well as to produce a financial report for an annual district tournament.
The Maseru executive committee is made up of president Mothusi Letsie, vice president Metsing Mofosi, general secretary Lebohang Ramakhula, vice secretary ‘Mualle Maefa, treasurer Samuel Mokhosi and public relations officer Ben Pofane.
Three committee member posts are currently vacant.
When the Maseru clubs met at the Lesotho Football Association (Lefa)’s offices at Bambatha Tsita on Sunday, they wanted to pass a vote of no confidence against this committee.
However, none of the executive committee members was present at the indaba and the vote of no-confidence was deferred.
The rebelling affiliates first met on December 19 at Pitso Ground and elected an interim committee which was put on standby until the incumbent office-bearers are booted out.
The interim committee is made up of Tsèliso Tale, Sekonyela Mokhosi, ‘Muso Mofoka, Manuela Thebiri and Retselisitsoe Sefali.
This week Tale accused Letsie’s committee of boycotting the meeting on Sunday.
He told the Lesotho Times they had now resolved to ask the football mother body Lefa to intervene.
“Difa Maseru boycotted the meeting and decided to go round the regions giving balls to teams on the same date of the meeting,” Tale said.
“Hence the meeting agreed to do resolutions and the main one was to write a letter to Lefa asking it to instruct Difa Maseru to attend our meeting.”
Tale said it was clear the district committee had lost the mandate to run football in Maseru.
“(The meeting) was successful and it was a sign that Difa Maseru has a big problem of failing to administer 43 teams,” he said.
Letsie in a separate interview however said his committee had not boycotted the meeting.
He said they did not recognise the interim committee which had summoned them to Sunday’s indaba.
“We did not boycott any meeting,” Letsie told the Lesotho Times.
“We saw a piece of paper that does not show names of the teams requesting a meeting with us or that are not happy with our administration.”
He said the people who wrote letter knew the committee had plans to visit Moitsupeli and Roma on the same day.
“We had a whole programme to visit our teams in the regions and this Sunday we went to Moitsupeli and Roma regions to see teams and distribute balls,” Letsie said.
“They knew very well of this.”
