FEDERATION of Lesotho Rugby (FLR) president Fetang Selialia will step down before the next election, the Lesotho Times can reveal.
Selialia took over the leadership post in 2014 after the federation’s founding president Dan Alyward stepped down on his return to his country of origin – England.
During Alyward’s tenure, Selialia was the vice president. Alyward has served since the formation of the federation in 2012.
Selialia was to be elected to the post in January 2017 during the federation’s first constitutional elections.
The current committee’s term ended in January and the association this week said its elections would be held held by March this year.
Selialia said he has decided not to contest for presidency in the next FLR elections and was looking forward to becoming an ordinary committee member.
“The constitution allows me to stand for election but due to personal commitments, I’m going to step down and maybe just become an ordinary committee member. I still want to serve the sport but not at the top. Therefore, I will be available to assist. I will however, continue performing my presidential duties until the elections.
“Due to personal commitments, I feel like I’m no longer giving the sport the much-needed attention, so I want to give someone a chance to lead the federation,” Selialia said.
Although he believes that they have achieved a lot since the inception of the federation, he said he would be happier if the federation gets its own offices equipped with standardised facilities.
“We have been trying our best to develop the sport but the challenge has been the lack of facilities and we thought by now we would be having our own headquarters. We also wanted to have decentralised the sport by having district centres,” he added.
He said he would be happy to see the upcoming administration striving to revive women’s rugby and investing in development.
“Women’s rugby is essential and we have been trying to improve it but there is a lack of interest from women especially once they get married. They must work towards decentralising the sport,” Selialia said.
