THE Lesotho Institute of Accounts (LIA) on Tuesday donated food parcels worth M10 000 to St Angela Cheshire Home of Disabled Children.
The donations which included foods like fresh milk, sugar, maize meal and samp were part of LIA’s annual corporate social initiative (CSI) to assist the needy.
LIA chief executive officer Monyaola Mosoloane said the gesture was in response to a request for basic needs by the home.
“My office attended to the plea and saw it fit that since its Christmas time and children recently went back to school after the Covid-19 lockdown, we should buy this food,” Mr Mosoloane said.
St Angela chief executive officer ’Mamokhosi Thamae expressed her gratitude to LIA for its gesture saying it came at an opportune time as they were stranded.
“We were stranded and did not know what to do but thanks to LIA for responding to our plea, we can now feed the children during these difficult times,” Ms Thamae said.
St Angela is home to 35 disabled orphans aged from six to 23. Twenty-six of them are wheelchair bound.
The home was founded in 1983 by a Roman Catholic Church (RCC) priest and has since been surviving on donations. It was opened to bring children living with disabilities closer to Abia High School and Seleso Primary School.
Ms Thamae said even though children go back to their homes when schools close, there are some who remain at the centre because of the unbearable living conditions in their respective homes. Those who will return home will also get some food parcels.
Twenty-one-year-old Lebohang Raphea, who has been living at St Angela since she was only eight, said she was thankful to LIA for their kind gesture.
She said the home was critical to them as apart from shelter and food, they also get physiotherapy services.
“We are grateful to LIA for the assistance and I hope other institutions could also assist us with wheelchairs and crutches,” Ms Raphea said.
She also appealed to the authorities to pave the access road to the home so that it becomes accessible to wheelchair bound people,
