Re: NUL staff protest, Lesotho Times, August 19-25 2010

The National University of Lesotho (NUL) is on its knees.

The traditional means of financing the long-standing institution’s activities through government funding no longer makes sense.

This problem has been known for a long time now but no feasible alternative has been put in place. If this problem is left unattended, it will result in the closure of the institution, something which will bring about very serious repercussions for Lesotho.

There are many think-tanks and consultants who can be hired to find some means the university can use to solve this problem.

Changing the staff might help turn things around at NUL.

Some people own their positions for ever despite poor service delivery. Some of these people have worked almost all their lives at NUL yet they do not necessarily have the best qualities to do so. Job tenure at NUL should be reviewed to increase competition in the workplace.
