MASERU — Lesotho will be part of the historic Youth Olympic Games starting in Singapore tomorrow.
Four athletes — Tšehla Monethi, Mpho Moeti, Ntšeke Setho and Lineo Machobane — will be representing Lesotho at the inaugural youth tournament for competitors aged between 14 and 18.
Monethi will run in the 200 metres race while Moeti will compete in the 3 000 metres.
Setho, a promising swimmer, will take part in 50 metres breaststroke and 150 metres backstroke races.
Machobane will fight for a medal in taekwondo.
The athletes were seen off after a ceremony at a local hotel, Maseru Sun, on Monday.
Two coaches, Poloko Ntulo and Reynaldo Salas, have accompanied the team to Singapore.
In another development Lesotho’s team for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, in October is expected to be officially unveiled before the end of the month.
Meanwhile, the start of the Vodacom Premier League campaign is likely to be delayed by at least a week.
The domestic season was expected to kick-off on August 21, but that will not happen because the premier league failed to hold its annual general meeting on Sunday.
The meeting will be followed by elections for the top-flight league’s executive committee which will then decide when the season can begin.
Premier League spokesperson Lehlohonolo Matlosa told the Lesotho Times this week that the league was only likely to start on August 28.
“The league is only going to hold its AGM this Sunday. And they will hold the elections on Tuesday,” he said.
“So the new committee will only start work next Wednesday at the earliest.
“We can only look at the weekend of August 28 (as a possible start date for the premier league).”
