OPPOSITION bloc leaders, Thomas Thabane of the All Basotho Convention (ABC), Monyane Moleleki of the Alliance of Democrats (AD), Thesele ’Maseribane of the Basotho National Party (BNP) and Keketso Rantšo of the Reformed Congress for Lesotho (RCL) have reiterated their call for the Pakalitha Mosisili-led government to hand over power to them in parliament.

The leaders made the call during a press conference on Tuesday in Maseru ahead of their proposed motion of no confidence against the government which was tabled before parliament yesterday.

“Immediately after the motion of ‘no confidence’ against Prime Minister Mosisili and his government has been passed in parliament, the expectation is that immediately the government of Lesotho shall change and we therefore plead with the government to uphold peace and stability by allowing a smooth transition in parliament,” Dr Thabane said.

Dr Thabane said upon assuming power, they would implement an agreement they signed last November, stipulating that Mr Moleleki would be Prime Minister for the 18 months and he (Dr Thabane) would take over for the next 18 months.

“We shall be a government which shall uphold the rule of law, peace and stability and embrace the reforms towards the betterment of the economy of this country and job creation across all economic sectors,” Dr Thabane said, adding, they would implement all the reforms to ensure stability and socio-economic development as per the recommendations of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Commission led by retired Botswana judge, Justice Mpaphi Phumaphi.

For her part, Ms Rantšo said their government of national unity (GNU) would unite Basotho as they would no longer be any discrimination along party lines.

Mr ’Maseribane echoed Ms Rantšo’s statements, adding “this unity (among the congress and nationalist parties) has taught us big things and is quite humbling, I therefore plead with ABC supporters to take it is a legacy”.

For his part, Mr Moleleki thanked Dr Thabane for letting him lead government “when he has double the numbers that I command in my party”, adding, and “I am not worthy to lead this government”.

“Our battle is an easy one, although Pharaoh is still hardening his heart.

“We appeal to His Majesty and the Council of State to open the Red Sea and open up the waters to drown Pharaoh,” Mr Moleleki said.

He also thanked the security agencies for having thus far ensured that “we were protected and no single drop of blood was shed and we pray that this transition be a dignified one where no bullet shall be used”.
