Leomile to launch debut album

SONGBIRD, Leomile Motsetsela, is set to launch her long-in-coming debut album titled Pula Molomo on 2 September 2016 at AVANI Maseru Hotel.

During the launch event, the Johannesburg-based singer will perform the tracks on the album along with an eight-piece band with guest performances from rappers Sadon and Futuristic as well as singer LJ Lehana.

Leomile told the Weekender this week she decided to launch the album in Lesotho where her music career started.

“Lesotho is where it all began for me, and where my heart is. Therefore it was only befitting that I launch my first project in the nation I was born and raised,” said the Thetsane-born songstress.

“The album tour will follow later on, although the dates have not been set yet. We haven’t yet arranged a distribution network for the album, so the only place it will be available for now would be at the album launch.”

Leomile said it took her over two years to complete the album, which she could not consign in a particular genre.

“The album revolves around tribal, folk and soul music. I like to blend modern and traditional sounds,” she said.

Among the tracks to be unveiled during the launch are Lerato Le Felile, Kenna Eo, Pula Molomo and Song For Pulane.

“As an artist, I take my time before releasing my material because it is important to be confident of its quality before taking it to the market. Once the music is released, there is no chance to rectify whatever mistakes may surface,” said Leomile.

“The album does not carry a specific message because all the compositions were inspired by different things. I just try to tell African stories in a creative way.”

Retracing her musical journey, Leomile said it all started at the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance (AFDA) where she was studying for a film degree.

“I started off my career as a first-year student at the University of AFDA in Johannesburg and decided to change my field of study from film to music after I realised that it was what I really enjoyed,” said Leo, adding that with time, she became a regular feature at popular Johannesburg club Baseline.

“It was a case of trial and error at first. However, I later submitted my demos at Bassline and they fell in love with my music. I have performed at the club on a number of occasions.”
