THE district of Leribe, together with the Ministry of Gender, Youth Sports and Recreation, on Sunday celebrated Her Majesty Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso’s 38th birthday in style.
The annual event, held in Peka, was graced by Prime Minister Thomas Thabane, his deputy Mothejoa Metsing and Chief Thesele Maseribane to name a few of the dignitaries who attended the festivities.
The Kolobere Principal Chief, Pontšo Mathealira, said the event is meant to celebrate the queen’s birthday in her home town whom he described as a “precious gift that God has given us”.
“We are grateful that the Queen is celebrating her 38th birthday and very proud that she was born in our district of Leribe,” Chief Mathealira said.
Since becoming queen Her Majesty has embarked on initiatives to help the less fortunate in Lesotho.
On his part, Chief Maseribane thanked the community of Peka for celebrating the queen’s birthday annually.
“We are very thankful to the Leribe community,” Chief Maseribane said. “This is the district where our queen was born.”
The event was made all the more colourful with cultural activities such as Mokhibo and Mohobelo dances, horse racing and the soothing melodies from St Monica’s Primary School choir.
In her speech, Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso thanked her home town community for the warm welcome she received.
“I feel honoured to be part of this occasion that celebrates this important day in my life and the fact that I was born here and went to school at St Monica makes it more special,” Her Majesty said.
“I can see that this is more of a family day, in which we have all come together to celebrate and I wish this kind of tranquillity will always be here.”
The queen urged parents to allow their children to go to school, adding that they should not burden them with responsibilities while they are still young.
