MASERU – A Quthing woman escaped being raped last week after biting the finger of a man who attempted to rape her.

Police spokesperson Masupha Masupha said the 32-year-old suspect attacked the 31-year-old victim at her house while she was sleeping at night.

“The victim told police that while she was sleeping she heard someone jumping into the house through the window,” Masupha said.

“When she tried to wake up from the bed to see what was happening the suspect strangled her. She got a chance to bit one of the suspect’s fingers and he ran away leaving his blanket.”

The suspect screamed for help and neighbours who came to her house were able to identify the suspect as he had been seen wearing the same blanket during the day.

Villagers arrested the man and handed him to Quthing police where the victim managed to identify him because of the injured finger.

The suspect appeared briefly before court and was remanded in custody.

In a separate incident, an 83-year-old man from Mohale’s Hoek was arrested for allegedly beating to death a 56-year-old man on June 10.

According to a police report the suspect attacked the victim after he alleged that he had insulted him.

“The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated with serious head injuries,” the police said.

The victim died a day after the attack. The suspect was immediately arrested.
