Lesotho national killed in South Africa

THE South African Police Service (SAPS) in Welkom, Free State Province, are seeking assistance in tracing relatives of a 22-year-old Mothabiso Lekeba who was fatally stabbed at Odendaalsrus taxi rank on 14 January 2023.

According to Welkom SAPS spokesperson, Captain Stephen Thakeng, Lekeba died at Bongani Hospital with several wounds on the head.

Lekeba is believed to have been a Lesotho national.

Captain Thakeng also requested the public to help trace suspects who may have fatally stabbed the deceased as they were still at large.

“On 21 January 2023, Odendaalsrus Police were summoned to Bongani Hospital where upon arrival they were informed about an unknown man who had passed on,” Capt Thakeng said in a statement to the Lesotho Times.

“According to the medical report, the deceased was transferred from Thusanong hospital to Bongani hospital on the 14 January 2023 at about 5.06pm with severe head injuries. It is suspected that a sharp instrument was used to stab him.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the late Mothabiso Lekeba originates from Lesotho and his next of kins are also in Lesotho. The body is still kept in the Forensic Pathology Services in Welkom.”

Capt Thakeng also asked people with information “that will help trace the suspects, or whereabouts of his next of kins….. to please contact Detective Sergeant Nomthandazo Mtengwane of Odendaalsrus Detective Services on +27 82 301 2797 or Crime Stop number 08600 10111”.
