The Ministry of Law, Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs was yesterday presented with a printing machine, Information Technology (IT) equipment and three vehicles by the European Union (EU) Mission in Lesotho.

The handover ceremony took place at the Government Printers in Maseru.

In his acceptance speech, the Minister of Law, Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs, Advocate Haae Phoofolosaid: “The EU project for strengthening the Lesotho justice system has implemented various initiatives aimed at building the capacity of the various institutions within the sector.

“The project, which started with the objective of strengthening the rule of law in Lesotho, was first implemented in February 2013 and is expected to end in December 2014.

“In addition, the project also provides equipment which includes computers, printers, heavy-duty photocopiers, laptops, overhead-projectors, as well as a thermal plate also known as the computer-to-plate (CTP) machine which we have just seen today.

“To us, as a ministry, the provision of CTP equipment made our dream of adopting and adapting to the latest technological trends in the printing sphere, a reality. And for that, we are sincerely indebted to the EU and all other players in the project who made it all possible.”

Advocate Phoofolo said the equipment was going to save the government “a significant amount of time and money”.

On behalf of the EU, Mariam Homayoun said the M55million initiative was meant to strengthen Lesotho’s justice system.

“The intention was to purchase IT equipment, heavy duty-printing machinery and video recorders so as to allow the utilisation of the case management system designed and provided by a previous intervention funded by the Millennium Challenge Account,” Ms Homayoun said.
