MASERU — A 30-year-old old woman from Thaba-Bosiu is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges of concealment of birth.
Police spokesperson Masupha Masupha said the woman is suspected to have dumped her still born baby girl on Tuesday last week.
Masupha said the body was found buried in a vegetable plot where the suspect stays.
The suspect is currently in hospital under medical supervision after she reported to the police that she was ill.
“She will appear in court as soon as she is released from hospital where she is being treated after the alleged incident,” Masupha said.
He noted that police were worried about the increasing cases of concealment of births being reported to the police. In a separate incident, a 20-year-old woman from Qoaling was last Friday also charged with concealment of birth in the Maseru Magistrate’s Court.
She was slapped with a one year imprisonment or a fine of M200.
The sentence was later suspended on condition that she does not commit a similar offence within the next two years.
The body was found hidden near the suspect’s home.
Meanwhile, a 49-year-old woman’s house in Quthing was burnt by an angry mob two weeks ago.
The woman reported that her son, who was recently released on bail, was sleeping in the room when the incident occurred.
The son was allegedly accused of killing some villagers from Ha Lebesele.
The villagers who torched the house were not happy that the suspect was granted bail while police were investigating the case.
The suspect managed to escape after sustaining minor injuries.
Police are investigating the case.
