MASERU – The sports ministry will this year spend over M27 million to support 32 associations as well as prepare for international games.
This was disclosed by Sports Minister ’Mathabiso Lepono during her ministerial budget speech on Monday.
The sports ministry was this year allocated M67 166 881, about M10 million more than last year.
Lepono said M27 400 025 would be used to support the Lesotho Sports and Recreational Commission (LSRC)’s 32-member associations for the 2011/2012 financial year.
“M27 400 025 will be used to support the LSRC’s 32 associations, All Africa Games and Olympic preparations,” Lepono told parliament.
“The funds will also be used for the Vision 2020 games, horse and cattle races, tri-district sports festival, support to Cuban experts, Public Service Day games as well as high altitude summer marathons.”
Lepono said her ministry would also fund the development of football and community sports academies, and the running of the districts.
She said they had already followed procurement procedures set for sports facilities around the country.
“Under the improvement of community sports facilities, procurement of minimum infrastructure packages has been completed for 10 districts,” Lepono said.
There were also plans to further upgrade Setsoto Stadium when resources are available.
The national stadium has just been completed since renovations started in 2008 after the world football governing body Fifa advised that it be upgraded to meet international standards.
