MASERU — MIP (Music in Progress)’s certified banger Basali (women) is definitely sending local crowds into a frenzy, the best Lesotho has to offer this festive season.

Drawn from the United States’ rap music, the track samples Migos and Drake’s song Versace giving it a Sotho-Hop twist. Its vibe is more of a mellowed feel to clubland and it is getting heavy rotation.

Speaking to the Weekender on Monday, rapper and producer Thulo “T-Mech” Monyake said they actually hated the original track Versace.

“I was chilling with my homeboy and fellow rapper RMC when we first heard the song.

“We found it to be hilarious and started ‘dissing’ it.

“We then decided to sample the song and give it a local taste. We were just playing around,” he chuckled.

“After recording the song a number of local rappers fell in love with it and they wanted to do a remix.

“Being a person that likes working with others, I thought it was worth a shot.”

The artistes released what they call the all-star remix of the banger. It features T-Mech, Turk, JiJi F, Lebza P, Nirex, Shuffle, Skepza D, Juvenile, Flixx, L Tore and Anonymous.

It bears the title Basali because it is all about women, with each rapper stating his own perception of them, whether good or bad.

“These cats really killed it, they are versatile.

“Honestly speaking, we are surprised by the reception the song is getting. People are really showing so much love.

“It has put us under the spotlight which we believe has opened doors for us.

“Although we cannot really say whether our next production will blow the fans away, we promise to maintain our standard and maybe go beyond people’s expectations,” said Monyake.
