AN 18-year-old Koro-Koro man has been remanded in custody after briefly appearing in court on 10 August facing rape charges.

According to police deputy spokesperson, Senior Inspector Lerato Motseki, the man allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl from the same village.

“It is reported the suspect’s sister asked the alleged victim to escort her, but decided to leave the 14-year-old girl at her home in Koro-Koro. The suspect, who was at home at the time, allegedly raped the girl. The suspect will appear in court on 24 August,” she said, adding that girls and women should be vigilant about their safety even among people they know.

Senior Inspector Motseki said a disturbing trend had emerged of gender-based violence victims being abused by people they knew very well and trusted.
