Queen ‘Masenate: A grateful mother balancing royal duties, family life

IN a heartfelt exclusive interview with the Lesotho Timesthis week, ahead of her 49th birthday, Her Majesty Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso expressed profound gratitude for her dual role as a mother and a royal figure.

As the Queen of Lesotho for the past twenty-five years, she embraces her responsibilities, not only to her children—Crown Prince Lerotholi and Princesses Senate and ‘Maseeiso—but also to Basotho, who affectionately refer to her as ‘Mabasotho (Mother of the Nation).

Reflecting on her journey, Queen ‘Masenate articulated the intricate balance of motherhood and her national duties.

“It’s definitely a huge responsibility,” she said. “But with the support of family members, especially His Majesty (King Letsie III), I’ve managed to balance family life with my role as the Mother of the Nation.”

Her sentiments echo the unique challenges that come with her position, yet she remains optimistic and thankful for the unwavering support within her family.

Queen ‘Masenate’s life transformed when she married King Letsie III twenty-five years ago and the couple has worked hand in hand to navigate the complexities of their royal obligations while nurturing their children.

The Queen noted that her husband has always played a vital role in ensuring that their family remains a priority. “I have never really felt that my roles as a mother and as a queen clashed,” she revealed. “The balance has always been there, thanks to my family’s embrace of our shared responsibilities.”

Queen ‘Masenate’s dedication extends beyond her immediate family to all Basotho.

“It’s wonderful that I can serve my people without feeling that my children are suffering or feeling neglected,” she said with a warm laugh. “They understand that they share their parents with everyone else, which makes our family dynamics much easier.”

To further emphasize her commitment, the Queen spoke about her interactions with Basotho.

“Showing care and compassion for my people is as important as nurturing my children. Both roles enrich my life, and I am grateful every day for the strength and guidance I receive from God.”

This dedication reflects a broader commitment to community engagement that resonates with pretty much every Mosotho.

While balancing motherhood and royal duties may appear daunting, Queen ‘Masenate’s perspective highlights the importance of familial support and shared responsibilities.

She attributes her ability to navigate these dual roles to the “love and understanding we have as a family”. It is a blessing to her, she said, to serve and nurture her people while equally nurturing her children.

As she continues her reign, Queen ‘Masenate remains a symbol of hope and resilience for many in Lesotho. Her understanding of the nuances between her royal duties and her familial responsibilities sets a precedent for future generations. “With God’s grace, I look forward to continuing this journey of service,” she said, reflecting the deep-seated values of love, unity, and compassion that characterize her reign.

In an era marked by increasing challenges for leaders worldwide, Queen ‘Masenate’s reflections offer a poignant reminder of the importance of balancing personal and public life, making her a revered figure not only within the walls of the royal palace but also in Basotho’s hearts.

Her journey exemplifies the power of grace, support, and gratitude in fulfilling the roles we hold dear.

The Lesotho Timeswishes Her Majesty a happy birthday in advance, filled with the same kind of love, warmth, and support she selflessly extends to others through her royal duties.
